Abstract

The rapid expansion of social media has transformed political communication and civic engagement across the globe, particularly among young people. Digital platforms such as Facebook, X (formerly Twitter), Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube have become important spaces where youth access political information, discuss public affairs, mobilize for collective action, and participate in democratic processes. In developing countries such as Pakistan, social media has significantly influenced political awareness by providing alternative channels of communication beyond traditional media. These platforms enable political parties, activists, and civil society organizations to interact directly with young citizens while encouraging political expression and participation. However, social media also presents considerable challenges, including misinformation, political polarization, hate speech, algorithmic bias, and digital manipulation that may negatively affect democratic values. This article critically examines the role of social media in shaping youth political participation through theoretical and empirical perspectives. It explores how digital technologies influence political knowledge, civic engagement, election campaigns, online activism, and democratic participation among Pakistani youth. The study further discusses opportunities and policy implications for promoting responsible digital citizenship while addressing the challenges associated with online political engagement.
