Cultural Heritage and Sustainable Development

Abstract

Cultural heritage constitutes not only a legacy from past generations but a dynamic resource for sustainable development. This article examines the interplay between cultural heritage preservation and sustainable development in the context of Pakistan, addressing tangible and intangible heritage, economic opportunities, and societal wellbeing. It argues that harnessing cultural heritage can contribute to the economic, social and environmental pillars of sustainability by generating employment, reinforcing local identity, and promoting conservation. At the same time, Pakistan faces challenges such as inadequate legal frameworks, limited funding, rapid urbanisation, and weak community engagement. Building on international literature and Pakistan’s case, the article proposes a conceptual framework for heritage led sustainable development, emphasising governance, community participation, financial innovation, technology integration, and strategic planning. The paper concludes with policy implications and a roadmap for preserving the past while promoting the future
