Abstract

The expansion of influencer marketing has transformed how brands communicate with young consumers. Social media influencers occupy a distinctive position between traditional celebrities, digital content creators, product reviewers, and online peers. Their ability to combine personal storytelling with commercial communication allows them to influence consumer perceptions of brand honesty, reliability, quality, and social relevance. This article examines the relationship between social media influencers and brand trust among young consumers, with particular attention to credibility, authenticity, transparency, parasocial interaction, content quality, and influencer–brand congruence. The analysis suggests that influencer marketing strengthens brand trust when young consumers perceive the influencer as knowledgeable, honest, consistent, relatable, and genuinely connected with the endorsed product. Informative and entertaining content can reduce uncertainty regarding unfamiliar products, while regular interaction creates a sense of emotional closeness between influencers and followers. However, excessive endorsements, hidden sponsorships, weak product–influencer fit, misleading claims, and highly scripted content may generate skepticism and damage both influencer credibility and brand reputation. The article further discusses the relevance of these mechanisms in Pakistan, where young consumers increasingly use social platforms to discover fashion, beauty, technology, food, travel, and lifestyle brands. It concludes that brands should prioritize long-term relationships with suitable influencers rather than focusing only on follower numbers and short-term visibility. Clear advertising disclosure, responsible communication, cultural sensitivity, evidence-based claims, and continuous monitoring are essential for developing sustainable brand trust. Future research should employ longitudinal, experimental, and cross-platform designs to examine how trust develops and changes over time.
