The Role of NGOs in Promoting Human Development and Social Welfare

Abstract

Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) have emerged as crucial agents in promoting human development and social welfare in developing countries like Pakistan. Their role extends from addressing poverty, health, and education to empowering marginalized communities and advocating for good governance. This paper explores how NGOs contribute to sustainable human development by filling institutional gaps, implementing community-based projects, and influencing public policy. Using a qualitative approach and secondary data, this study examines key dimensions such as education, healthcare, gender equality, and social justice. Findings reveal that while NGOs have significantly contributed to service delivery and empowerment, challenges such as resource dependency, lack of accountability, and government-NGO coordination persist. Strengthening institutional frameworks and enhancing transparency can further enable NGOs to complement national development agendas effectively.
